15) Black Point, Exumas, Bahamas

Monday, March 16
We left Staniel Cay and headed to Black Point. It was 2 hours to go around the point. Jason and Kate are completing a ASA 106 class with Kim. So they are in charge of the trip.

When we rounded the point, Kim's fishing pole started to bob up and down. Fish on!

Mutton Snapper. That's a happy fisherman!
We walked around a little bit. Found the Police Station, the school, a phone booth with a phone, restaurants, and Grannie. Grannie makes coconut bread. We heard about her two islands away. She was so sweet. We actually went into her kitchen and bought 2 loaves. It smelled so good! Stopped for drinks at Emerald Sunset View and met Pappi, the owner. Great view from the deck.

Had dinner at High Tide and then back to the boat. It is rolly in this anchorage so getting back on the boat was interesting.

One of the sailboats had a fancy mast.

Happy St. Patrick's Day

Woke up to a light rain. Sunrise and Grannie's Coconut bread french toast. Listened to the Cruiser's radio (VHF channel 68) to hear about all the events happening on the island.

Rain continued on and off for most of the morning and the winds change direction by 180 degrees. Anchor started dragging so we pulled anchor and moved across the bay. Reset anchor in a wide open space away from other boats and settled in.

The rain continued so we decided to set off to shore knowing we would get wet but an adventure awaited.
There was a break in the rain so we headed back towards the dingy. It was a good 2 miles. As we passed the hotdog stand, the lovely lady gets in her car to drive us to our dingy. Sooo nice! When we got to the path that would take us through the mangroves to the dingy, she says that this is her Crazy Cousin's house. Kate captured the walk.
The island seemed to be empty due to the rain. We were the only ones at Emerald Sunset View. Pappi, the owner, was happy to see us. We had been there yesterday and he remembered us. We had drinks, listened to music. Kate mastered the dart board. Found the Crow's Nest. Pappi made us complementary conch fritters because we dared the rain to come to his bar.
We pulled the dingy on shore so it would be there when we got back. The path to the road was interesting but we did find the road. Had a couple of Hudsonville umbrellas to keep us somewhat dry. We saw a lot of unfinished houses among the cute small hurricane safe houses. We came across the hotdog stand that was mentioned on the Cruiser's radio and decided to try it out. Two loaded foot longs for the four of us. The woman running the stand was so nice. While we ate our hotdogs under the awning of her stand she made us conch fritters also.  When we were done eating we started heading out in the rain again and the super nice lady insisted her dad, who was sitting in his van, drive us to the next place. So we all hopped in and he drove us to Emerald Sunset View bar.
The dingy needed bailing but we managed it. Got back to the boat only to find out we had dragged anchor again. Not a lot but still some. Also, other boaters had moved closer to us and some were too close. So we pulled anchor and went to a mooring ball. Made fish tacos from the mutton snapper that Kim caught. All in all it was a fun, wet day.
